One Person, One Vote Means Exactly That One of the more common claims made during discussions about voting is that voting for an independent candidate somehow “helps” another candidate. The argument usually goes something like this: if you vote for an independent, you’re really taking a vote away from a Republican or Democrat, and therefore your vote is effectively counting twice. The problem is that this argument falls apart when examined logically and mathematically. Consider a simple election: * Candidate D receives 1 vote. * Candidate R receives 1 vote. * Candidate I receives 1 vote. At the end of the count, each candidate has exactly one vote. No more. No less. Every voter cast one ballot, and every ballot was counted once. Yet some people claim that the vote cast for Candidate I somehow also affects another candidate’s total. If that’s true, then a fundamental question must be answered: Who decides where that extra vote goes? Does the independent voter’s ballot automatically become half a vote for Candidate D? Half a vote for Candidate R? Does someone in government make that decision? Does a political commentator? Does a party official? Of course not. The reason is simple: there is no extra vote. The independent voter cast one ballot for one candidate. The Republican voter cast one ballot for one candidate. The Democratic voter cast one ballot for one candidate. Every citizen exercised the same right and carried the same weight at the ballot box. When someone says an independent vote is “really a vote” for another candidate, they are not describing how elections work. They are expressing disappointment that the voter did not choose their preferred candidate. Voting is not a loan agreement where one party has a claim on your ballot. Your vote belongs to you. It is not automatically assigned to a major party candidate simply because someone thinks it should have been. This misconception often reveals a troubling attitude toward elections. It assumes that voters owe their support to one of two major parties rather than evaluating candidates on their merits, principles, and policies. In reality, voters are free to support whichever candidate best represents their views. That freedom is one of the defining features of a representative republic. The math is straightforward: One voter = One vote. One ballot = One candidate. No voter receives two votes. No ballot counts twice. No citizen loses ownership of their vote because they choose an independent, third-party, or write-in candidate. If someone argues otherwise, the burden is on them to explain where that mysterious second vote comes from and who gets to decide where it goes. Until they can answer that question, the principle remains unchanged: One person. One vote. Counted once.
